"In a year that saw Alice Munro garner the ultimate accolade from the Swedish Academy, it was fitting that short stories got another high-profile salute in the form of Lynn Coady's Giller win for her collection Hellgoing. Dip into Wireless, about the travails of a hard-drinking travel writer, and see if you don't find yourself devouring the rest in one sitting. Elsewhere on the story front, my big discovery of the year was the Israeli backpackers' favourite Etgar Keret, whose Suddenly, a Knock at the Door - technically not a 2013 title, but widely available in Canada for the first time - is an ideal introduction to his less-is-more modern fable style."
