My wife comes in the room and asks, “Are you writing?” She wants to ask me something. Something else. I can see it on her face, but at the same time, she doesn’t want to interrupt me. She doesn’t want to, but she already has

Interview with Shanghai Daily

Mar. 15th, 2014 | 01:08 pm

"Known as a best-selling short story writer, rare today, Keret says he had never deliberately chosen this form.
“Some people see writing as a journey from point A to point B. I couldn’t do that. I can’t plan and organize ahead to write a novel. For me, writing is like surfing. Sometimes ‘Nazi’ Is the Right Word

Jan. 18th, 2014 | 02:00 pm

And when you dig yourself a tunnel, there’s always a target on the other side: empathy that will lead to a fuck; male intimacy that will mix most excellently with a bottle of whiskey; something that will reestablish your great value as a tenant to the landlord who’s come to raise the rent.

Ian McGillis discovers Keret

Dec. 31st, 2013 | 12:44 am

"In a year that saw Alice Munro garner the ultimate accolade from the Swedish Academy, it was fitting that short stories got another high-profile salute in the form of Lynn Coady's Giller win for her collection Hellgoing. Dip into Wireless, about the travails of a hard-drinking travel writer, and see if you don't find yourself devouring the rest in one sitting. Elsewhere on the story front, my big discovery of the year was the Israeli backpackers' favourite Etgar Keret, whose Suddenly, a Knock at the Door - technically not a 2013 title, but widely available in Canada for the first time - is an ideal introduction to his less-is-more modern fable style."
